Introduction to Ergonomics
Occupational diseases are health issues caused by certain conditions related to the job. Conceptually, they must be separated from work accidents, which can also occur on the job due to various hazards.
Work-related MusculoSkeletal Disorders
Particularly, Work-related MusculoSkeletal Disorders (WMSD) are a group of painful disorders of muscles, tendons and nerves.
Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, thoracic outlet syndrome and tension neck syndrome are examples. Work activities which are frequent and repetitive or activities with awkward postures cause these disorders, which may be painful during work or at rest.
Almost all work requires the application of arms and hands. Hence, the WMSD have the biggest effect on hands, wrists, elbows, napes and shoulders. Work with the leg can lead to WMSD of the legs, hips, ankles and feet. Some back problems can also come from repetitive work.
